How many lives for plastic bottles?

Can you guess what this person cradles in his hands?

This man holds in his hand the recycled equivalent of 16-oz plastic water bottles that are being used in the fabrication of seat fabric for automobiles!

You would have to live under a rock if you didn’t know what an environmental disaster spent plastic bottles are. For many years now we are urged to keep plastic bottles out of landfills and instead discard them into recycle bins.

Fabric is not the only use for recycled bottles. Recycled plastic bottles can also find new life as carpets, playground equipment, even dress shirts, bedding and even underwear!

Why should you look for TCE in your drinking water?

Our local paper today carried an article about the suffering TCE (trichloroethylene) in the drinking water supply has caused many inhabitants of Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

TCE is a known human cancer-causing chemical (EPA). Fuel leaks and other sources of pollution can and do create a toxic cocktail that finds its way into drinking water supplies. The Camp Lejeune area had to deal with this water contamination for decades and now people with several forms of cancer -- kidney, bladder and male breast cancer -- affirm that the drinking water is the source of their illness, and health officials believe as many as 1 million people have been exposed to the tainted water.

This is not a pleasant subject, but a good opportunity to explain that TCE (trichloroethylene) is part of a group of chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOC)s. There is a long list of VOCs and other contaminants and most of them have a detrimental effect on body systems. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that VOCs are present in one-fifth of the nation's water supplies.

The good news here is that TCE or any of the VOCs are not necessarily in all drinking water sources; they may or many not be in the water that comes into your home. Yet for protection against TCE and other contaminants that may be there, it is increasingly desirable to have a drinking water system that effectively deals with such chemicals.

Celebrating World Water Week

This week is World Water Week. The big event takes place in Stockholm Sweden where Stockholm International Water Institute organizes this yearly event.

The World Water Week is an unique forum for the exchange of views and experiences between scientific, business, policy and civic sectors from around the globe.

By harnessing and linking best practices, scientific understanding, policy insight and decision-making, the meeting aims to transcend rhetoric and provide real answers to the world’s water-related problems. This year the topic, besides the fact that it is all about water of course, is The Water Quality Challenge: Prevention, Wise Use and Abatement.

Access to clean water and proper sanitation is one of the 8 millenium goals. Better understanding of the water cycle is thus an important task for our global society, particularly in the developing countries.

With increased urbanizations in areas where access to fresh water seems to be in peril makes events like World Water Week and research connected to better understanding of the water cycle an even high political and scientific priority. The overall niche for the current World Water Week period 2009-2012 is Water – Responding To Global Change.

What do Pets, Mixed Drinks, Soups and Salad Have in Common?

It's not that pets enjoy the mixed drinks that grownups enjoy, but they sure can tell what's in their drinking bowl. We tested that theory and sure enough, pets sniff and then choose the "clean" water. Smart animals that they are!

We tested the same on cocktails with friends, minus the sniff-test, but with the same results!

By now everyone knows that the term "drinking water" means water that's safe to drink (or at least should be!) Most people think of it as just that: water to drink. Let me tell you about some equally important uses for "drinking water" that you may not have thought of.

I tell my customers to use the drinking water from their Multi-Pure filter in their cooking, for ice and their beverages.

Does Everybody Need a Drinking Water Filter?

Naturally, we think so; but then, we are biased, remember? Not everyone feels the same as we, but since you have come to this blog, you may be looking for an effective drinking water filter and we want to help you make the best choice for your particular situation.
